Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over what he described as a suspicious credit alert received in one of his private bank accounts, alleging that the incident may indicate a breach of his confidential banking information.
The allegation was contained in a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.
According to the statement, the transfer originated from an individual unknown to Atiku and carried the narration, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”
The statement stressed that neither Atiku nor his campaign solicited, authorised or had prior knowledge of the payment or the individual behind it.
Atiku questions access to private bank details
The former vice president expressed concern that the account involved is a strictly private one whose details are not publicly available.
He questioned how an unknown individual obtained the confidential banking information, describing the circumstances surrounding the transfer as deeply troubling.
According to the statement, if the private banking details of a former vice president and leading presidential candidate could be accessed without authorisation, the financial privacy of ordinary Nigerians could also be at risk.
Fears over possible abuse of privileged access
Atiku said it was even more disturbing that the confidential information may have been obtained through individuals with privileged access to banking records.
He warned that if such access was established, it would amount to a serious abuse of power capable of exposing account holders to criminal activities, including kidnapping, terrorism, banditry and fraud.
The statement noted that such a development would pose significant threats to personal security and financial privacy.
Security agencies urged to take note
The former vice president said the incident had been brought to the attention of the Nigerian public and relevant security agencies.
He described it as one in a series of suspicious developments occurring ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the statement, the authorities should thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the transaction and determine how the private banking details became accessible to an unknown individual.
Atiku dismisses alleged political intimidation
The statement urged Nigerians not to be distracted by what it described as attempts at character assassination as political activities intensify.
It maintained that similar tactics had failed in the past and would not derail Atiku’s political ambitions.
Shaibu said the former vice president remains focused on offering Nigerians credible leadership and practical solutions to the country’s challenges ahead of the next general elections.
