A nine-year-old student in Ofa, Kwara State, is attracting attention for using TikTok to make complex mathematics easier for children and adults to understand.
Charlotte Muritala, a JSS2 student, developed an interest in mathematics from an early age and has since turned her passion for numbers into educational content shared online.
Using a marker, board and smartphone, Charlotte creates short tutorial videos in which she breaks mathematical problems into simpler steps. Her lessons cover topics including algebra, fractions and geometry.
Charlotte said her interest in mathematics began when she was about five years old, explaining that she enjoys numbers, puzzles and the challenge of solving difficult questions.
According to the young tutor, breaking complicated problems into smaller parts makes them easier to solve.
Her mother created the online platform to enable Charlotte to share her knowledge with other children, while her parents continue to guide her activities on social media.
Charlotte’s father described her as a child who is constantly eager to learn and challenge herself. He said she spends significant time reading and studying mathematics, while also receiving additional lessons outside school.
Despite her young age, Charlotte’s influence extends beyond her online audience. Her teachers say she has also become an inspiration to classmates who struggle with mathematics.
One of her teachers described her as an outstanding student with a strong passion for solving mathematical problems.
The teacher also called for greater support for students with exceptional abilities, including access to qualified teachers, scholarships and adequate funding.
Charlotte’s use of TikTok comes at a time when concerns continue over children’s exposure to social media. Her experience, however, highlights another potential use of digital platforms — providing educational content, encouraging learning and helping young people build confidence.
For Charlotte, mathematics is not simply a school subject. She sees it as something enjoyable and hopes her lessons will encourage other young learners not to be afraid of difficult questions.
Her advice to other students is simple: keep practising, learn from mistakes and never give up.
