The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old suspect, Solomon Onaola, over accusations of contravening the state’s laws through sexual assault and defilement.
Onaola was nabbed by operatives of the security agency who stated that the alleged offender defiled the 15-year-old victim in a case that has now been transferred to the Gender Based Offences Unit for discreet investigation.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, on Tuesday, said that the alleged incident which happened at Omifon area was reported at the Odigbo Police Station, disclosing that the suspect, who was working as a domestic help in the household of the survivor, had severally taken her to his late mother’s residence where he allegedly engaged her in unlawful sexual intercourse.
Jimoh held that the teenager has been placed under appropriate care and necessary steps are being taken in accordance with established procedures for cases involving alleged sexual offences against minors.
The Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, has directed the Gender Based Offences Unit to conduct a thorough investigation in the matter and establish facts and ensure accurate justice, adding that the suspect is held in police custody and would be charged to court after the completion of investigation.
Ohagwu stated that the Command would continue to ensure protection of children and other vulnerable persons from becoming victims of sexual crimes, and added that perpetrators of the crime would face the wrath of the law.
He also urged parents, guardians to remain vigilant, pay attention to the welfare of their children, and also report cases of sexual assault, promptly, to necessary agencies.
