EGYPT defeated Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in extra time to book their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tightly contested Round of 32 encounter saw both sides battle for over 120 minutes before Egypt held their nerve in the shootout.
Egypt made a bright start and took the lead in the 13th minute through Emam Ashour, who finished calmly after receiving a pass from Karim Hafez.
Australia struggled to create clear opportunities in the opening half as Egypt controlled possession and looked dangerous on the counterattack.
The Australians made their first change at the start of the second half, introducing Kai Trewin for Jordan Bos in a bid to improve their performance.
Their persistence paid off in the 55th minute when Egypt defender Mohamed Hany accidentally turned the ball into his own net, handing Australia an equaliser.
The goal lifted Australia’s confidence as they pushed forward in search of a winner, while Egypt responded with tactical changes bringing on Hossam Abdelmaguid for Hamdy Fathy in the 67th minute.
Australia also refreshed their attack in the 74th minute, introducing Ajdin Hrustic for Cristian Volpato and Mohamed Toure for Nestory Irankunda.
Egypt later brought on Mahmoud Trezeguet for Karim Hafez in the 80th minute as both teams searched for a decisive goal.
Neither side could find the breakthrough in regulation time, forcing the game into extra time.
Australia introduced Patrick Okon-Engstler and Awer Mabil at the start of extra time, while Egypt continued to adjust their squad.
Hassan received a yellow card in the 105th minute before Abdelkarim was introduced for Omar Marmoush a minute later.
Veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan replaced Paul Beach in the 119th minute in a late tactical move ahead of the expected penalty shootout.
Tensions rose in the closing moments as Egypt’s Yasser Ibrahim was shown a yellow card in the 120th minute, while Mohamed Saber came on in stoppage time.
In the penalty shootout, Australia suffered an early setback when Harry Souttar missed his effort.
Egypt capitalised immediately as Mohamed Saber converted his kick, while Jackson Irvine responded for Australia.
Rami Rabia restored Egypt’s advantage before Awer Mabil scored to keep Australia in contention.
Mohamed Salah calmly converted Egypt’s third penalty, but Australia’s hopes faded when Luke Herrington missed his attempt.
Hossam Abdelmaguid then converted the decisive penalty to seal a 4-2 shootout victory for Egypt and send the Pharaohs into the Round of 16.
Egypt’s discipline and composure in the shootout ultimately proved decisive.
