Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has revealed that earning a university degree remains one of his personal goals, despite enjoying a successful professional football career.
The Galatasaray forward made the disclosure in an interview that resurfaced online on Monday, where he reflected on education, personal growth and life beyond football.
According to Osimhen, while life has taught him valuable lessons outside the classroom, he still hopes to complete his formal education in the future.
‘Football will not last forever’
The 2023 African Footballer of the Year acknowledged that a football career has a limited lifespan and stressed the importance of preparing for life after retirement.
He explained that obtaining a university degree is something he continues to consider because football cannot be played forever.
Osimhen said his ambition is also driven by a desire to inspire young people who may have abandoned their education due to financial difficulties or other personal challenges.
Wants to inspire young Nigerians
The Super Eagles star said returning to school would send a strong message that it is never too late to continue one’s education.
He encouraged young people to understand that dropping out because of life’s challenges does not mean their academic journey has ended.
According to him, education remains available to anyone willing to pursue it at the right time.
From humble beginnings to global success
Osimhen’s journey to the top of world football has made his message particularly meaningful to many Nigerians.
Born in Edo State, the striker announced himself on the global stage by finishing as the top scorer at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup, helping Nigeria lift the trophy.
He later played for VfL Wolfsburg, Charleroi and Lille before completing a move to Napoli, where he won the Serie A Golden Boot and helped the Italian club secure its first league title in 33 years.
The prolific striker now plays for Turkish champions Galatasaray, where he has continued his impressive goalscoring form.
Education remains a priority
Osimhen has consistently encouraged young footballers to combine their sporting ambitions with education.
Earlier this year, during a visit to Beyond Limits Football Academy in Ikenne, Ogun State, he urged players not to neglect their studies while chasing football careers.
He also donated ₦10 million to support the academy’s development and reminded the young athletes that education would remain valuable long after their playing careers come to an end.
