South African singer Tyla has removed Lagos from the schedule of her A*POP World Tour, a decision that has sparked fresh conversations online after days of mounting calls for Nigerians to boycott her planned performance.
The Lagos concert, previously scheduled for December 22, no longer appears on the official tour itinerary. The change was noticed on Friday, shortly after criticism intensified across social media over reports of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa.
The planned show had generated heated debate, with many Nigerians arguing that the concert should not go ahead while concerns over the treatment of Nigerians in South Africa remained unresolved.
Boycott campaign gathers momentum
Several public figures, including content creator Solomon Buchi and media personality Dotun, publicly urged Nigerians to boycott the concert. They described the campaign as a symbolic protest against the alleged xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa.
Much of the public outrage also centred on the case of Chidimma Adetshina, the former Miss Universe Nigeria of Nigerian descent, who is facing deportation proceedings in South Africa. The controversy further fuelled calls for Tyla’s Lagos performance to be cancelled.
Fans await official explanation
Despite removing Lagos from the tour schedule, Tyla is still expected to conclude the A*POP World Tour with performances in Cape Town and Johannesburg in January.
Neither the Grammy-winning singer nor her management has issued an official statement explaining why the Lagos date was removed.
