Three commuters narrowly escaped death after sustaining varying degrees of injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash along the LASU–Isheri Road at Iyana School, inward Igando, Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the accident occurred when a MACK flatbed truck reportedly suffered brake failure, causing the driver to lose control and ram into a Toyota with registration number FGC 80 XE and a TVS commercial tricycle with registration number LSR 604 QP, triggering the collision.
As gathered, the impact of the crash trapped three occupants, one man and two women, who sustained severe fractures.
They were rescued from the wreckage by LASTMA officials and other emergency responders before being rushed to El-Shaddai Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
According to the agency on Wednesday, its personnel, who were on routine traffic surveillance along the corridor, responded immediately by activating the emergency response protocol.
Working in collaboration with officers of the Iba Police Division, they evacuated the damaged vehicles, cleared the accident scene and prevented secondary crashes.
The swift intervention also ensured the restoration of normal vehicular movement along the busy corridor after the affected vehicles had been removed.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the professionalism and swift response of the agency’s personnel during the rescue operation.
He urged motorists, particularly operators of articulated and heavy-duty vehicles, to carry out comprehensive mechanical inspections before embarking on any journey, with special attention to the condition of their braking systems.
According to him, routine preventive maintenance of critical vehicle components remains essential to reducing avoidable road traffic crashes and improving road safety across Lagos State.
Bakare-Oki also advised motorists to comply with traffic regulations and report road emergencies through LASTMA’s toll-free emergency short code, 3367, to enable prompt intervention by emergency response teams.
