Spanish nationals in Lagos on Monday celebrated Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Spanish supporters gathered at Churrasco Restaurant on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, to watch the final, which was played at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, United States.
The venue erupted in celebration when substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, securing Spain’s second World Cup title and their first since 2010.

Spain, the reigning European champions, dominated much of the contest but were repeatedly denied by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez before finally breaking the deadlock in extra time.
Speaking after the match, one of the supporters, Hiero Lapaz, said Spain had exceeded expectations by defeating both France and Argentina en route to the title.
“Not many people gave us a chance, even here in Nigeria. Most people expected France or Argentina to win the World Cup,” he said.
“People overlooked us despite the fact that we are the European champions. But after we defeated France, more fans began supporting us here.
“This team has shown its quality by beating two of the tournament’s strongest sides. Congratulations to Spain.”
Another supporter, who identified himself simply as Custa, praised Spain’s midfield, describing it as one of the best in world football.
“Our midfield is exceptional. Rodri Hernández remains one of the best in the world, while Pedri, Martín Zubimendi and Lamine Yamal are outstanding players.
“Playing against Spain is never easy because our midfield can change the course of a game at any moment. Rodri, in particular, played a huge role in helping us achieve this dream,” he said.
A Nigerian football fan, Tola Adekoya, described the 2026 tournament as one of the most entertaining editions of the World Cup.
“I believe this has been one of the best World Cups in recent times because of the quality of football on display,” he said.
“It was also a memorable tournament for African teams. Morocco, Cabo Verde, Egypt and Senegal all performed admirably and showed that African football continues to improve.
“The final lived up to expectations. Spain were the better team, but Argentina made them work hard until extra time. Congratulations to Spain, they are worthy champions.”
Spain’s triumph ended a 16-year wait for a second World Cup title after their maiden success in South Africa in 2010.
