Governor Chukwuma Soludo has unveiled a statue of the late Nigerian literary icon, Chinua Achebe, in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, describing the celebrated author as a global symbol of excellence whose works continue to inspire generations.
The monument, located at Ugwunwasike Roundabout in Achebe’s hometown, was unveiled on Saturday, 13 years after the renowned novelist’s death. Speaking at the ceremony, Soludo said the state government remains committed to preserving Achebe’s legacy while encouraging the emergence of more literary talents across Anambra.
“Achebe represents excellence and remains one of the world’s greatest literary figures. We will continue to support initiatives that inspire the emergence of more Achebes in Idemili north and Anambra state,” the governor said.
Soludo noted that Achebe’s contributions to literature have earned him global recognition and continue to shape conversations on African identity, history and culture around the world.
Also speaking, Chairman of Idemili North Local Government Area, Stanley Nkwoka, said both Achebe and Soludo have made significant contributions that have brought international recognition to Anambra State.
The Anambra State Government said the monument is expected to strengthen efforts to preserve Achebe’s legacy while promoting the cultural heritage and tourism potential of Ogidi.
Widely regarded as the father of modern African literature, Achebe was born on November 16, 1930, in Ogidi, Anambra State. He gained worldwide acclaim with his 1958 novel Things Fall Apart, which has been translated into dozens of languages and remains one of the most widely read African literary works.
Beyond Things Fall Apart, Achebe authored several influential books, including No Longer at Ease, Arrow of God, and The Trouble with Nigeria, while also writing essays, poetry and short stories that examined colonialism, governance, identity and post-independence Africa.
Achebe died on March 21, 2013, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, at the age of 82 after a brief illness. He was buried in his hometown of Ogidi on May 23, 2013.
