A new era for regional integration began in West Africa with the inauguration of the new headquarters of the ECOWAS Commission. Chair of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government and President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, officially inaugurated the new headquarters of the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja, Nigeria, on Thursday, July 2.
The event brought together high-level dignitaries, including the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Alieu Omar Touray; and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, representing the government of the People’s Republic of China, which financed and constructed the new headquarters.
The inauguration of the new headquarters ushers in a new chapter for the ECOWAS Commission as it continues to advance its vision of an integrated West Africa where people enjoy peace, stability and shared prosperity.
Realnews reports that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and China signed the memorandum of understanding, which enabled Beijing to fund and build the new ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria at a cost of 31.6 million U.S. dollars.
The new building consolidated ECOWAS operations in one building from the three used. China is to maintain the new building for three years following its completion.
