The Senate has confirmed Abayomi Fasina as a non-career ambassadorial designate despite objections from civil society organisations and some lawmakers over allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations and victimisation.
His confirmation followed the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which recommended his clearance after reviewing the allegations against him.
The decision came days after a coalition of civil society groups protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, urging lawmakers to halt Fasina’s confirmation.
The protesters argued that allegations against the former university administrator should be resolved before he is appointed to represent Nigeria abroad.
Presenting the committee’s report on Thursday in Abuja, Senator Simon Lalong said investigations by relevant authorities, including the university governing council and the Nigeria Police, had found no evidence to substantiate the allegations against Fasina.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio defended the confirmation process, saying lawmakers relied on reports from relevant institutions, including the Police, Department of State Services (DSS) and the university council. He urged senators to base their decisions on verified information rather than unconfirmed claims.
“Senators must take their assignments with respect and not rely on hearsay,” Akpabio said.
Speaking during the protest, lawyer Amira Adeyemo, who represented the coalition of civil society groups, said their opposition was driven by concerns over accountability and Nigeria’s reputation rather than any personal disagreement with Fasina.
“I am here as a concerned Nigerian and a member of civil society, not because I have any personal vendetta against Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina. This issue is bigger than one individual,” she said.
Despite the objections, the Senate proceeded with the confirmation, clearing Fasina for the non-career ambassadorial appointment. Civil society groups, however, said they would continue to demand accountability over the allegations raised against him.
