Arise Television anchor Rufai Oseni has criticised First Lady Oluremi Tinubu following her recent appeal to Nigerian music stars to channel more of their wealth into charitable causes.

In a post shared on his verified X account on Sunday, Oseni argued that public office holders should demonstrate financial restraint before asking private citizens to make similar sacrifices.

Journalist urges government to lead by example

Reacting to the First Lady’s remarks, Oseni questioned whether government officials were also willing to reduce public spending.

He specifically referenced the size of official convoys, suggesting that leaders should set an example through cost-cutting measures.

According to him, calls for philanthropy would carry greater weight if government officials also embraced measures aimed at reducing unnecessary expenditure.

Oseni’s reaction followed remarks made by the First Lady during the launch of the National Community Food Bank in Lokoja, Kogi State.

At the event, she encouraged leading Nigerian artistes, including Davido, Burna Boy and Asake, to establish charitable foundations and dedicate more of their resources to supporting vulnerable Nigerians.

She noted that addressing the country’s social and economic challenges requires contributions from both government and private individuals, adding that the government cannot meet every need alone.
