The Zamfara State Police Command has arrested two suspects and recovered 55 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition during a stop-and-search operation conducted along the Anka–Bagega Road in Anka Local Government Area of the state.
The operation was carried out by a joint security team comprising personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Community Protection Guard (CPG), who intercepted a Volkswagen Golf III driven by Abubakar Rilwanu, a resident of Bagega.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, on Tuesday, a search of the vehicle led to the recovery of the ammunition, which had been concealed inside a polythene bag.
Further investigation revealed that the ammunition belonged to one of the passengers, Rabiu Mohammed, a native of Jambako in Maradun Local Government Area, who allegedly admitted that he had collected the consignment from Dodori Village in Gwandu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Police said Mohammed further confessed that he was transporting the ammunition to a suspected accomplice identified simply as Oliya, who remains at large.
The two suspects are currently in police custody as detectives continue investigations aimed at apprehending the fleeing suspect and dismantling the criminal network believed to be behind the illegal movement of the ammunition.
Commending the operatives for the successful operation, the Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, CP A. M. Bello, reiterated the Command’s commitment to curbing the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition across the state, while urging residents to continue providing credible intelligence to support ongoing efforts to protect lives and property.
