Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has unveiled plans to introduce smart tricycles equipped with advanced telecommunication facilities and onboard surveillance cameras as part of efforts to modernise the state’s transport sector and strengthen security.
The governor also called on transport operators to play a more active role in combating insecurity, kidnapping and human trafficking, describing them as key stakeholders in the state’s security architecture.
Mutfwang made the announcement yesterday while receiving members of the Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN), Jos Chapter, and leaders of other transport unions at the
New Government House, Rayfield. He urged operators to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies, noting that their role was crucial in protecting lives and property.
Expressing concern over the rising cases of kidnapping and human trafficking, particularly involving young girls, the governor appealed to transport operators to report suspicious movements and help safeguard vulnerable passengers.
He disclosed that the state government was in advanced discussions with investors to procure a large fleet of modern tricycles fitted with communication and surveillance systems. According to him, the ownership scheme would be affordable and transparent to prevent exploitation of operators.
The governor further announced plans to phase out commercial motorcycles within the next year, introduce electric vehicles, replace obsolete buses, expand the Tin City Metro Bus Scheme and pursue long-term investment in rail transportation.
Mutfwang also revealed plans to establish Air Plateau to stimulate economic activities around Yakubu Gowon Airport and position the state as a regional hub for commerce and tourism.
To strengthen collaboration with transport unions, he announced that five additional Special Assistants would be appointed from among transport union leaders, alongside the existing Coordinator of Road Transport Workers.
He also promised easier vehicle registration, special fertiliser allocations for operators engaged in farming and a lasting solution to truck operations at Mararaba Jama’a.
Earlier, the Plateau Transport Sector Coordinator, Hon. Husseini Gunok, said the sector has more than 48,000 members across the state and pledged continued support for the Mutfwang administration.
TOAN Chairman, Marcus Yakubu, also commended the governor for engaging transport stakeholders and reaffirmed the union’s commitment to promoting peace and development.
