The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde’s request to proceed on a one-month annual leave, clearing the way for Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal to assume office as Acting Governor during his absence.
The approval followed the consideration of a formal letter from the governor notifying the Assembly of his planned leave in accordance with constitutional provisions.
The leave will commence on August 10 and end on September 11, while Governor Makinde is expected to resume official duties on September 14, 2026.
The approval was granted during Thursday’s plenary, where the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided in the absence of Speaker Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, read the governor’s correspondence to members.
In line with constitutional requirements, the governor formally notified the Assembly of his temporary absence, a move that underscores adherence to due process and respect for democratic governance.
Lawmakers expressed confidence in the ability of Deputy Governor Lawal to steer the affairs of the state throughout the governor’s leave, assuring residents that governance and the delivery of public services would continue without disruption.
Commending Makinde for following constitutional procedure, members said the notification reflected his commitment to the rule of law and institutional accountability.
The Deputy Speaker also wished the governor a restful leave and expressed confidence in Lawal’s capacity to effectively discharge the responsibilities of Acting Governor.
The Assembly subsequently directed that its resolution approving the leave be communicated to the executive arm for necessary action.
The development underscores Oyo State’s commitment to constitutional governance and provides assurance that government activities and policy implementation will continue seamlessly throughout the governor’s absence.
