Ogun Assembly drops fraud allegations against former speaker

The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution exonerating its former Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, of allegations of embezzlement that were linked to his removal from office in January 2024.

The decision followed the consideration and adoption of a report presented by the Committee of the Whole House during plenary at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Presenting the report on Wednesday, the Deputy Speaker, Lateefat Ajayi, informed lawmakers that the committee had reviewed the circumstances surrounding Oluomo’s removal and the allegations that accompanied the process.

She subsequently moved a motion for the adoption of the report, which was seconded by Mr. Yusuf Amosun and unanimously approved through a voice vote.

The Assembly noted that the allegation of embezzlement was not included in the notice of removal served on the former Speaker before his ouster.

It held that the allegation could not be substantiated based on the evidence available to the House.

According to the report, lawmakers carefully examined Oluomo’s petition, in which he requested either a formal exoneration or the presentation of evidence to support the accusation.

The former Speaker had submitted the motion to the Assembly on March 31, citing his constitutional right to fair hearing as guaranteed under Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Following its review, the committee concluded that there was no sufficient basis for retaining the allegation of embezzlement against Oluomo.

Consequently, the House resolved that the allegation should be withdrawn and should no longer constitute part of the grounds cited for his removal from office.

In a further development, the Assembly overturned Oluomo’s impeachment and resolved to commute it to a resignation. Lawmakers said the decision was taken after considering the broader interests of the institution and the need to foster unity among members.

The House explained that the resolution was aimed at promoting camaraderie, harmony and reconciliation within the legislative arm, while ensuring that the official records accurately reflected the circumstances surrounding the former Speaker’s exit from office.
