The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) Thursday forecasted a high riverine flood risks over the next seven days in Adamawa, Lagos and Borno states.
The director general, NIHSA, Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, said in a statement that the risk is attributed to rising river water level which may result in flooding across vulnerable floodplain communities.
The statement said the key Hydrological stations currently at risk are: Numan station on the Benue River, Gushaga station on the Komagudu- Yobe River, as a total of three states have been identified as being at risk.
The affected states are Adamawa where local government areas to be affected include Numan and Lamurde and estimated inclusion of 147 communities,49 schools,40 health facilities,6 markets,17 religious centres, while Lagos state affected LGAs include Agege, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Amuwo-odofin, Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Kosofe among others.
Estimated exposures include 26 communities, 9 schools,8 health facilities and 6 markets.
In Borno state, local government areas to be affected include Gubio and Mobbar with estimated exposure of 680 communities, 8 schools, 6 health facilities, 5 markets and 21 religious centres.
Residents and authorities in affected areas are advised to relocate people, livestock and valuables from floodplain to safer, higher ground immediately.
