NAHCON, ABU Partner to Launch MBA in Hajj Operations Management
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a specialised Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme in Hajj Operations Management, aimed at enhancing professionalism and improving service delivery in Nigeria’s pilgrimage sector.
The agreement was signed on Friday at the NAHCON Headquarters in Abuja by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NAHCON, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, and the Commission’s Secretary, Dr Mustapha Muhammad Ali, while the Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Professor Adamu Ahmed, and the University’s Registrar, Malam Rabiu Samaila, signed on behalf of the institution.
Speaking during the ceremony, Ambassador Yusuf described the partnership as a landmark step towards the professionalisation of Hajj and Umrah administration in Nigeria.
He noted that the growing complexity of Hajj operations requires highly trained professionals equipped with specialised knowledge, practical skills and a thorough understanding of the rapidly evolving pilgrimage industry.
According to him, the MBA programme will combine rigorous academic instruction with practical field experience to strengthen planning, coordination and service delivery for Nigerian pilgrims.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Professor Adamu Ahmed, said the initiative marked the culmination of nearly a decade of sustained collaboration between the university and NAHCON.
He explained that the programme would integrate academic excellence with practical industry experience to produce professionals capable of meeting the changing demands of Hajj and Umrah administration.
The Vice-Chancellor led a high-powered delegation from ABU, including the Director of the Distance Learning Centre, Professor Mohammed Bashir Mu’azu; the Registrar, Malam Rabiu Samaila; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Advancement, Research and Innovation), Professor Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi; the Director of the CBN Centre for Economics and Finance, Professor Auwalu Haruna; alongside other senior academic and administrative officials.
The NAHCON delegation, led by Ambassador Yusuf, included the Commission’s Secretary, directors, the Rector of the Hajj Institute of Nigeria (HIN), Professor Nasiru Maiturare, and other members of the Commission’s senior management.
The MBA in Hajj Operations Management is a joint initiative of the Hajj Institute of Nigeria and the ABU Distance Learning Centre.
It is designed for officials of NAHCON, State Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards and Commissions, licensed Hajj and Umrah tour operators, professionals in the travel, tourism and hospitality industries, religious scholars, entrepreneurs and graduates seeking careers in pilgrimage management within Nigeria and internationally.
NAHCON expressed confidence that the pioneering programme would strengthen professional standards, improve the quality of services rendered to pilgrims and position Nigeria as a global hub for Hajj education, training and research.
The Commission also encouraged qualified Nigerians and other interested applicants to enrol in the programme, adding that details on admission requirements, application procedures and the commencement date would be announced by Ahmadu Bello University in due course.
