The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert to Nigerians to shun consumption of banned alcohol drinks from Ghana.
The NAFDAC in Public Alert No. 032/2026, disclosed that over 140 boxes of the drinks were confiscated by the Ghana Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), adding that the products were seized during regulatory enforcement operations because of concerns over their safety and regulatory status.
The enforcement carried out in the Upper East Region of Ghana saw the drinks, Bel Ice Vodka Energy Drink and Cody’s Vody Energy Mix seized, after they were previously been prohibited from sale and distribution due to the potential health risks associated with combining alcohol and stimulant ingredients commonly found in energy drinks.
According to a statement issued by the agency on Friday, the alcoholic energy drinks can pose significant health dangers because the stimulant components may mask the effects of alcohol intoxication, causing consumers to underestimate their level of impairment.
The agency warned that young adults and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to risks such as excessive alcohol consumption, increased risk-taking behaviour, impaired judgment and coordination, cardiovascular complications including elevated heart rate and blood pressure, dehydration, sleep disturbances, and a higher likelihood of alcohol-related injuries and accidents.
It advised importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers to ensure that the affected products are not imported, distributed, marketed, or sold within Nigeria, and also directed businesses to verify that all beverages offered for sale comply with NAFDAC registration and regulatory requirements and urged the public to report any suspected presence of the products in the Nigerian supply chain to the nearest NAFDAC office.
Consumers were further encouraged to report any sightings of the products or adverse effects linked to their consumption through NAFDAC offices or the e-reporting platforms available on the agency’s website.
NAFDAC said it remains committed to safeguarding public health by preventing the circulation of unsafe and unregistered products in Nigeria.
