Afrobeats singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has sparked debate after questioning the relevance of Nigerian languages while defending his children’s ability to speak French amid criticism over their apparent inability to speak Igbo.
The controversy began after the singer shared a post on X from Paris, expressing admiration for how effortlessly his children communicate in French.
“Still in Paris! Watching my kids speak French so effortlessly makes me think… maybe it’s time to own a crib here in Paris. Just a thought,” he wrote.
The post drew mixed reactions, with some social media users questioning whether his children could also speak Igbo, their native language.
Responding to the criticism on Monday, Okoye dismissed the concerns, questioning the practical value of Nigerian languages and accusing critics of hypocrisy.
“And who naija language help? Make I hear word abeg,” he wrote.
The remark triggered further backlash, but the singer maintained that parents should have the freedom to decide the languages their children learn.
“When it’s your turn, teach your own kids all the languages in Nigeria if that’s your choice,” he said.
“I’ve got just three words for you: MYB — Mind Your Business. Go and find someone else to pour your frustration on. Not here.”
He also questioned why people were concerned about his children’s language choices.
“Again, what exactly do you stand to gain if my children speak Nigerian languages? How does that improve your life? MYB — Mind Your Business. Cry harder.”
Reiterating his position, the singer said the debate was misplaced, insisting Nigerians should channel their energy towards addressing the country’s challenges.
“Out of all the real issues facing the country, this is what keeps you awake? Una never ready for our country. Ndi nchu,” he concluded.
