Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 22-year-old man, Olamide Suleiman, after recovering a locally made pistol, a live cartridge and substances suspected to be Indian hemp during a stop-and-search operation in the Aguda area of the state.
The arrest, which was made along Adetola Road, also led to the recovery of a double-barrel gun from a hotel room linked to another suspect who escaped before police arrived.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed the development in a statement on Wednesday, saying the suspect was intercepted during a routine stop-and-search operation.
According to the statement, a search conducted on Suleiman led to the recovery of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, while a further search of his bag uncovered a locally made pistol loaded with one live cartridge.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed that the pistol belonged to one Emir, who was lodging at a hotel in Aguda.
Acting on the information, police operatives proceeded to the hotel, where a search of the room allegedly occupied by the fleeing suspect led to the recovery of a double-barrel gun.
However, the suspect escaped before the officers arrived at the scene.
The police said investigations are ongoing, while efforts have been intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspect and other members of the suspected criminal gang.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, commended the operatives for their vigilance and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to ridding the state of criminal elements.
He urged residents to continue supporting the police by providing timely and credible information to aid crime prevention and detection.
