The Lagos State Government has issued a traffic advisory ahead of repair works on the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, warning motorists to expect temporary traffic disruptions as the Federal Ministry of Works begins replacing the bridge’s expansion.
The repair, scheduled to last two weeks, will require the temporary reduction of the existing four-lane carriageway to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch.
The lane restriction is intended to provide a safe work zone for engineers carrying out the rehabilitation, with moderate traffic expected around the Kara axis, particularly near the Fatgbems Turn, as motorists make U-turns or seek alternative routes to avoid delays on the July 28 exercise.
Announcing the development in a traffic advisory issued on Monday, the Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Bolanle Ogunlola, said motorists should anticipate partial traffic disruptions throughout the repair period and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed along the corridor.
According to the ministry, while congestion is expected around the Fatgbems Turn due to increased vehicular movements, traffic heading towards Ibadan beyond the junction is expected to flow with minimal disruption.
The ministry explained that the temporary lane reduction is necessary to create a secure work environment and ensure the timely completion of the project.
The government also advised road users to plan their journeys ahead, allow extra travel time, consider alternative routes where possible, and strictly comply with traffic regulations and directions from officials managing traffic around the affected corridor to minimise delays.
The Ministry of Transportation appealed for public understanding and cooperation, noting that the rehabilitation work is aimed at improving the safety, structural integrity and long-term durability of the Kara Bridge for the benefit of all road users.
