President Bola Tinubu has transmitted the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to the Senate for consideration, marking another step in the Federal Government’s efforts to reform Nigeria’s education sector.
The proposal was formally presented during Thursday’s plenary after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the President’s letter before lawmakers.
According to the Presidency, the amendment seeks to improve the administration, structure and regulation of public senior secondary education across the country.
FEC approved proposed legislation
In his communication to the Senate, Tinubu said the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the bill during its meeting on April 30, 2026.
He added that the Federal Ministry of Justice subsequently reviewed and finalised the proposed legislation in line with constitutional and legislative drafting requirements before it was forwarded to the National Assembly.
The President said the amendment aligns with his administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s educational institutions and improving learning outcomes nationwide.
President requests speedy legislative action
Tinubu urged the Senate to give the bill prompt consideration to facilitate its passage.
Following the presentation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the proposal to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business, directing the committee to submit its report within seven days.
Education reforms gather momentum
The latest bill comes amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to review key education policies.
Recently, Minister of Education Tunji Alausa announced plans to discontinue the policy separating Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) from Senior Secondary Schools (SSS).
According to the minister, the current arrangement has contributed to uneven student distribution and reduced progression rates, leaving millions of pupils unable to transition from primary education to senior secondary school.
The proposed amendment is expected to form part of broader reforms aimed at improving the efficiency and quality of Nigeria’s secondary education system.
