The High Court has sentenced two men to death for the 2018 murder of Delta State University (DELSU) student, Elozino Ogege, ending a trial that lasted nearly eight years.
Elozino, a 22-year-old Mass Communication undergraduate at DELSU, was killed in November 2018 after she was lured from campus and murdered.
The court found Macaulay Oghenemaro and Enaike Onoriode guilty of conspiracy, kidnapping and murder, sentencing them to death, while acquitting a third defendant, Nwosisi Benedict Uche.
Delivering the judgment on Wednesday, the presiding judge said the evidence before the court established the guilt of the two convicts and imposed the death sentence.
“The court cannot close its eyes to the gravity of this crime. Justice must be served, not only for the victim but for society at large,” the judge said.
Family members of the deceased welcomed the judgment, saying it brought a measure of justice, while student bodies and rights groups described the verdict as a significant step towards accountability.
