Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has explained the reason behind her decision to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying disappointment over unfulfilled political promises influenced her resignation.
Speaking during an appearance on the Morayo Show, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo said she decided to quit the ruling party after its consensus governorship candidate in Ogun State failed to honour commitments made to her and her supporters.
‘Promises were not kept’
According to Iyabo Obasanjo, her decision was driven by frustration over what she described as broken promises.
“I resigned from the APC because I was upset that the consensus candidate failed to keep the promises he made to me and my followers,” she said.
Her remarks provide further insight into the circumstances surrounding her departure from the party after the Ogun State governorship primary process.
Move to PDP
Following her exit from the APC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State officially welcomed the former lawmaker into its fold last Wednesday.
Her defection marks another chapter in her political career as she returns to the opposition party ahead of preparations for future elections.
Political journey
Iyabo Obasanjo returned to active politics in January 2026 after a 15-year break, joining the APC and declaring her intention to contest the Ogun State governorship election.
However, she resigned from the party on May 31, 2026, after failing to secure the governorship ticket. At the time, she cited disrespect, betrayal and what she described as unfair treatment by the party leadership as reasons for her decision.
