The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has called for stronger international cooperation among law enforcement agencies to combat terrorism, cybercrime and other emerging security threats.
Disu said closer collaboration between countries had become increasingly important as criminal networks continue to exploit technology, including artificial intelligence, encrypted communications and other digital platforms, to carry out cross-border crimes.
The IGP made the call while addressing the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026), held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from July 7 to 8.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Headquarters, the summit brought together ministers, inspectors-general of police, police chiefs and senior representatives of regional and international policing organisations to discuss strategies for strengthening global peace and security.
Addressing participants, Disu noted that while advances in technology present new challenges for law enforcement, they also provide opportunities to improve policing through the use of artificial intelligence, digital forensics and geospatial intelligence.
He, however, stressed that technological innovation must be accompanied by transparency, accountability, respect for human rights and adherence to the rule of law in order to maintain public trust.
The IGP also advocated greater international cooperation, intelligence sharing, capacity building and equitable access to modern policing technologies, saying no country should be left behind in efforts to tackle transnational crime.
He added that Nigeria remained committed to strengthening partnerships with other countries and supporting global efforts to combat terrorism, cybercrime and other cross-border security threats.
The Nigeria Police Force said the country’s participation at the summit reflects its commitment to promoting international law enforcement cooperation and contributing to global peace and security.
