Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has urged the Federal Government to ensure the safety of Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Atiku made the call in a statement issued on Thursday through his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, amid growing public discussions over Obi’s claim that his life had been threatened ahead of the 2027 general election.
Concerns follow Obi’s remarks
Peter Obi had recently raised concerns about his personal safety during an interview, a development that generated reactions from supporters and other Nigerians.
His comments sparked fresh debate about political tolerance and the security of opposition figures in the country.
Atiku says democracy must protect opposition voices
Reacting to the development, Atiku said safeguarding the lives of political leaders, regardless of party affiliation, is a constitutional responsibility of the Nigerian state.
He stressed that attacks or intimidation directed at opposition figures could weaken Nigeria’s democratic system.
According to him, every Nigerian should be able to express political views without fear of harassment or threats.
Calls for focus on national challenges
Atiku also urged the Presidency to respond to criticism with dialogue and responsible leadership rather than personal attacks.
He argued that democratic governance should encourage engagement with opposing views instead of hostility.
The former vice president further stated that the country’s major challenges remain poverty, hunger, insecurity, corruption and kidnapping, adding that addressing those issues should take priority over political disputes.
