THE Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to arrest and prosecute those behind the latest killings in Benue State.
The association condemned the attack on Otukpo-Nobi and Akpachi communities in Otukpo Local Government Area, where at least 16 persons were reportedly killed.
HURIWA described the incident as evidence of persistent security lapses and urged authorities to move beyond condemnations to decisive action.
The group extended condolences to families of the victims and the people of Benue State over the loss of lives.
It urged security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute all those responsible, including alleged financiers and collaborators.
The association also expressed concern over recurring attacks in Benue and Plateau states.
It said the pattern of violence showed gaps in intelligence gathering, surveillance and emergency response.
HURIWA urged President Bola Tinubu to treat the killings as a national security emergency requiring sustained military and intelligence operations.
The group also called on the governors of Benue and Plateau states to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve coordination with security agencies.
It said governors, as chief security officers of their states, should provide proactive leadership to protect vulnerable communities.
The association further demanded an independent investigation into the repeated attacks to identify those responsible and address operational failures.
HURIWA said ending impunity was essential to restoring public confidence in the country’s security architecture.
