Armed herdsmen have killed a member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) during an attack on operatives conducting community surveillance in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The victim, identified as Friday Ishaku, was fatally shot during the attack, while several other vigilante members sustained injuries.
The incident reportedly occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday along the Minjim–Manger River corridor in Bokkos.
A vigilante member familiar with the incident told correspondents on Monday that troops deployed to the area discovered Ishaku’s body with gunshot wounds upon arriving at the scene.
“The immediate priority was to secure the area and begin efforts to locate those behind the attack,” the source said.
“Operations are ongoing to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
The source added that troops immediately launched a manhunt for the attackers after confirming the killing, while additional security personnel were deployed to the area to prevent further violence and reassure residents.
According to the vigilante member, security agencies had intensified surveillance across the affected communities as of Monday morning, while investigations into the attack continued.
The Guild reports that the incident underscores the persistent security challenges in parts of Bokkos, where armed attacks have continued despite ongoing military and security operations aimed at restoring lasting peace in the area.
