A gang of gunmen has abducted a Catholic seminarian, Kelvin Ochai, after the armed attackers invaded the residence of a Catholic bishop in Benue State.
The Catholic Diocese described the abduction as a disturbing development and appealed for prayers as efforts continue to secure the victim’s safe return.
Moreover, the Diocese urged worshippers and other well-meaning Nigerians to remain hopeful while avoiding actions that could complicate ongoing rescue efforts.
It was gathered that the attack occurred on Wednesday at Bishop Michael Apochi’s residence in the Asa III area of Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
Confirming the incident in a statement issued on Friday, the Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, said Bishop Apochi was deeply saddened by the abduction and had called on members of the Church to unite in prayer.
“This painful incident has brought sorrow to the Diocese, but we remain steadfast in faith and hope for the seminarian’s safe return,” the statement said.
The Diocese also appealed to Christians and Nigerians of goodwill to pray not only for Ochai but for every person currently being held by kidnappers across the country.
“We entrust our brother and all others in captivity to God’s protection and pray that they will regain their freedom safely and without delay,” the statement added.
