The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has disclosed that no fewer than 161 people have died in road crashes recorded across Ogun State in five months.
The FRSC disclosed that the casualties died in 415 auto crashes,as well as 1,007 persons with varying degrees of injuries gotten from the mishaps, during the five-month period.
The agency also relayed that the statistics, were recorded between January and May 2026, despite a significant decline in accidents and fatalities compared to the corresponding period last year, crediting the improvement in road safety indicators to sustained public enlightenment campaigns and intensified enforcement of traffic regulations.
Speaking with journalists on Tuesday, the command’s spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, said that the 415 crashes recorded between January and May 2026 represented a reduction of 79 incidents from the 494 crashes recorded during the same period in 2025.
He added that the number of fatalities also dropped considerably, from 212 deaths recorded in the corresponding period of 2025 to 161 in 2026, while the number of injured victims declined from 1,121 to 1,007.
Odunsi attributed the improvement to the command’s consistent road safety advocacy, noting that continuous public education had encouraged greater compliance with traffic regulations among motorists and other road users.
“This feat couldn’t have been achieved without the intensive public enlightenment campaign by FRSC personnel, educating the public on road safety measures,” he said.
Despite the reduction in crashes and casualties, Odunsi expressed concern over the persistent disregard for traffic rules by some motorists, identifying speeding, drunk driving, dangerous overtaking, use of mobile phones while driving, overloading and tyre bursts as the leading causes of road crashes in the state.
He stressed that most of the crashes recorded during the period were preventable and resulted largely from avoidable traffic violations, urging motorists to exercise greater caution and responsibility on the roads.
The FRSC spokesperson appealed to drivers to strictly obey traffic regulations, avoid risky driving behaviours and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey to reduce avoidable deaths and injuries.
“We are appealing to motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations in order to prevent unnecessary loss of lives through road crashes,” he said.
Odunsi reaffirmed the Ogun State Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through sustained public sensitisation, stricter enforcement of traffic laws and other proactive measures aimed at improving road safety across the state.
