France secured a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after Kylian Mbappe’s second-half penalty earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay in Philadelphia, setting up a clash against Morocco.
The tournament favourites struggled to break down a disciplined Paraguayan side for long periods before Mbappe converted from the penalty spot to settle the last-16 contest.
The victory keeps France’s hopes of a third World Cup title alive, while Mbappe moved level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi on seven goals in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot.
Paraguay frustrate France
France dominated possession from the opening whistle despite temperatures reaching 38C, but Gustavo Alfaro’s well-organised side defended in numbers and limited Didier Deschamps’ team to few clear opportunities.
Paraguay, who eliminated Germany on penalties in the previous round, continued to frustrate the French attack throughout the first half.
The contest remained cagey, with neither side managing a shot on target before the interval.
France’s frustration was evident in the 36th minute when Mbappe reacted angrily after being fouled by Andres Cubas during a physical encounter.
Les Bleus returned after the break with greater urgency and finally tested goalkeeper Orlando Gill in the 54th minute when Manu Kone’s long-range effort forced the Paraguay goalkeeper into action.
Mbappe settles tense encounter
France found the breakthrough after coach Didier Deschamps introduced Desire Doue from the bench.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward made an immediate impact, driving into the penalty area and beating his marker before Brighton midfielder Diego Gomez clipped him inside the box.
Following a video assistant referee (VAR) review, referee Ilgiz Tantashev awarded the penalty.
Mbappe stepped forward and calmly sent Gill the wrong way to score the only goal of the match.
Paraguay searched for a late equaliser but were unable to create a clear opportunity against France’s organised defence.
The narrow victory sends France into the quarter-finals, where they will face African giants Morocco.
Meanwhile, Paraguay exit the tournament with their reputation enhanced after producing another strong performance, having already stunned four-time champions Germany in the previous round.
