The Federal Government has commenced efforts to verify the circumstances surrounding the death of a Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, who reportedly died from injuries sustained during a Russian aerial attack in Kharkiv, Ukraine.
Marian, a final-year student at Kharkiv National Medical University, was reportedly on her way to a graduation photo session with her friend, Fatima Huseynova, when the strike occurred.
It was gathered that Huseynova died at the scene, while Marian sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a medical facility, where she later slipped into unconsciousness.
Kharkiv National Medical University, which confirmed the incident, said Marian was initially treated in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for advanced medical care, where she later succumbed to her injuries despite efforts by doctors to save her.
Following the confirmation of her death, the government said it was working with the relevant authorities, as well as Nigeria’s missions in Ukraine and Germany, to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and provide the necessary consular assistance to the deceased’s family.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the death of the 23-year-old graduate of Kharkiv National Medical University as a tragic loss and extended its condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and the Nigerian community affected by the incident.
“The Federal Government extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, colleagues, and the Nigerian community affected by this tragic loss. The Ministry prays that Almighty God grants the deceased eternal rest and gives her family the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement read.
The ministry said the government remained committed to protecting the welfare of Nigerians abroad and would continue to monitor developments while providing all necessary support through its diplomatic missions.
It also reiterated Nigeria’s concern over the continuing loss of civilian lives in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and renewed its call for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
The Federal Government urged all parties to embrace dialogue, diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of disputes in line with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.
