Argentina footballer, Enzo Fernandez, has emerged as the sixth player to be issued a red card in final matches of the FIFA World Cup following his dismissal against Spain in the just concluded 2026 edition of the competition.
Enzo was sent off for a foul on Pau Cubarsi in minute 93, during the win-take-the-trophy-home game in which his team lost to a Ferran Torres’ goal, to join the list with other five players, two Argentines, two French and one Dutch, who were given the marching order.
Following the incident at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday, the Chelsea midfielder would now miss a game in the qualifiers for the next World Cup, when his South American country would be chasing their eligibility to feature in the competition which they have won three times, in 1978, 1986 and 2022.
The 25-year-old has now joined the likes of John Heitinga, Zinedine Zidane, Marcel Desailly, Gustavo Dezotti, Pedro Monzon in the unwanted list, all being sent off for unsportsmanship behaviour.
Heitinga was dismissed while playing for the Netherlands side in the 2010 edition played in South Africa, Frenchman, Zidane, in 2006 against Italy, Desaily in 1998 against Brazil, Dezotti and Monzon, both of Argentina, in the 1990 event.
Unsurprisingly, just one of the players, Desaily, was able to win the trophy after forcing his side a man short.
