The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has approved the dismissal of a female council chairman, Alice Tangi, and her deputy Sufade Tobi, over accusations of carrying out financial gross misconduct.
The lawmakers disclosed that it reached the resolution in accordance with the state’s Local Administration law as well as other relevant legal provisions which prohibits the act, after 17 of the 20 members vote in for the Tangi’s sacking, all expressing disgruntlement over the act as well as her failure to honour invitations by the House to respond to the allegations.
Speaker of the legislative chamber, Abraham Ingobere, said that the decision was taken during Tuesdays’ plenary following a petition against the duo council heads, who were accused of failed to present the spending of public funds for the Sagbama Local Government area, where they headed until their sacking, further informing that the decision would be communicated to the executive arm of government for further necessary sanctions.
Ingobere said that the day’s plenary also witnessed the approval of Governor Douye Diri’s request for the payment of the consolidated Academic Tool Allowance as well as the Non-Teaching Tools Allowance to staff of the state-owned universities.
A leader of the House, Monday Obolo, said that the initiative became necessary due to the challenges faced by the state’s institutions, adding that it would improve the welfare and productivity of the academic and non-academic staff.
Obolo uttered that the monthly financial implication of allowances of the three state-owned universities is N564,842,691.58, mentioning that the funds would be incorporated into the state’s salary structure, with payment payments expected to be paid from next month.
