A concerned Nigerian citizen, Seyi Babaeko, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to encourage dialogue and alternative dispute resolution in addressing the ongoing legal challenges involving former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai.
In an open letter addressed to the President, Babaeko appealed for statesmanlike intervention aimed at fostering national unity and reducing political tensions, while maintaining respect for judicial independence and the rule of law.
He noted that Nigeria is currently navigating a critical phase marked by economic difficulties, security concerns, and rising political polarisation, stressing that such challenges require inclusive leadership and collective national effort.
According to him, the call for dialogue does not amount to interference in judicial processes but rather reflects the need for constructive engagement and reconciliation within constitutional boundaries.
“Democracy derives its strength not only from political competition but also from the ability of leaders to manage differences and foster unity,” he stated.
Babaeko described El-Rufai as a significant figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, whose contributions to governance and public discourse remain part of the country’s democratic evolution, despite differing opinions about his leadership style.
He emphasised that moments of political tension provide opportunities for leaders to demonstrate statesmanship by promoting peace and strengthening democratic institutions.
The letter further highlighted President Tinubu’s longstanding reputation for coalition-building and consensus, urging him to leverage his political influence to encourage mutual understanding among stakeholders.
“The Nigerian people desire cooperation over conflict and unity over division,” Babaeko noted, adding that national progress depends on dialogue-driven solutions rather than prolonged political confrontation.
He urged the President to use lawful and constitutional means to promote peaceful engagement, expressing hope that the administration would be remembered for strengthening democratic values and fostering national cohesion.
