Egypt Makes W’Cup History: Beats Australia 4-2 on Penalties After 1-1 Draw

Egypt delivered a moment of pure footballing drama on Friday, overcoming Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw to record their maiden FIFA World Cup knockout victory and advance to the Round of 16.

The Pharaohs, guided by head coach Hossam Hassan, secured a huge pre-match lift when star forward Mohamed Salah was cleared to start at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The electric atmosphere reflected the weight of the occasion as Egypt chased a first knockout win since their last appearance in the phase back in 1934.

Egypt struck first in the 13th minute as Karim Hafez whipped in a precise cross that midfielder Emam Ashour met with a clinical header, beating the Australian defence to give the North Africans a 1-0 advantage and spark jubilant celebrations.

Australia gradually asserted themselves through their physical approach, led by towering captain Harry Souttar.

Their persistence paid dividends in the 55th minute when Aiden O’Neill delivered a threatening set-piece delivery.

Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently deflected the ball past goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir for an own goal that levelled the score at 1-1.

The closing stages of normal time produced heroics at both ends. In the 88th minute, Egypt’s Ramy Rabia powered a header towards goal, only for Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach to produce a stunning fingertip save that pushed the ball over the bar and forced extra time.

Neither side could find a winner during the additional half-hour despite intense pressing and tired limbs.

With one minute left in extra time, Australian coach Tony Popovich made a bold move by replacing Beach with veteran penalty expert Mathew Ryan.

The gamble backfired in the shootout. Harry Souttar missed Australia’s first kick, while Egypt’s Mahmoud Saber converted confidently.

Jackson Irvine equalised for the Socceroos, but Ramy Rabia restored Egypt’s lead.

Awer Mabil made it 2-2 before Mohamed Salah cheekily slotted his effort straight down the middle to put the Pharaohs 3-2 ahead.

Eighteen-year-old Australian substitute Lucas Herrington struck the crossbar in the next round.

With the decisive kick, Egyptian defender Hossam Abdelmaguid kept his composure and fired low into the bottom-left corner, sending Ryan the wrong way and sealing a 4-2 victory that triggered wild scenes among players and travelling supporters.

The triumph marks Egypt’s first-ever knockout-stage success at the FIFA World Cup and books their place in the Round of 16, where they will face either Cape Verde or defending champions Argentina.

Egypt became only the second African side to reach the last 16 after Morocco’s earlier victory over the Netherlands.
