Data scientist highlights technology’s potential to search for missing children 


Against the backdrop of growing concerns over missing children in Nigeria, a data scientist, Oluwaferanmi Ebo Winner Isola, has showcased a technology demonstrating how data science could support efforts to identify and reunite missing children with their families.

The demonstration, titled Missing Children Facial Recognition System, illustrated how facial recognition and machine learning can assist in comparing photographs against registered records to identify possible matches.

While presented as a proof of concept, the project drew attention to the increasing role technology can play in addressing humanitarian and public safety challenges.

The presentation comes at a time when cases of missing and abducted children continue to raise concern among families, civil society organisations and security agencies, prompting renewed conversations around the use of technology to strengthen existing search and identification processes.

Speaking on the project, Isola said data science should not be confined to commercial applications but harnessed to address issues that directly affect communities.

“Technology is most valuable when it solves real problems. Data science has the potential to support humanitarian efforts by providing practical tools that complement the work already done by security agencies and non-governmental organisations.”

The demonstration showed how photographs could be analysed to identify facial similarities and generate potential matches, providing an additional layer of support during investigations.

 It also stated the importance of responsible data governance, ethical standards and privacy protection in any future application of such technology.

As interest in data science and artificial intelligence continues to grow, initiatives such as the Missing Children Facial Recognition System reflect a broader shift towards using emerging technologies to improve lives and strengthen public services.
