CHRISTIAN Aid and the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) on Friday conducted a flood simulation exercise in Kaduna to strengthen community preparedness ahead of the 2026 flood season.
The exercise, held in Rafin Guza community under the Enhancing Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPREP) Project, trained residents on rescue, evacuation and emergency response procedures during flooding.
Mohammed Hassan, Central Coordinator of KADSEMA, said the exercise was timely as parts of Kaduna metropolis, particularly Kaduna North and the central axis, were already experiencing heavy rainfall.
He said the simulation was designed to equip residents of flood-prone communities with practical skills to minimise casualties and property losses during flood emergencies.
“As we are already experiencing heavy rainfall, it is important for communities to prepare ahead of possible flooding so they can respond effectively and reduce its impact,” he said.
Hassan said KADSEMA was coordinating disaster preparedness and response across the state in collaboration with relevant ministries, departments, agencies and development partners.
According to him, the agency also works with institutions responsible for environmental sanitation and waste management to strengthen disaster risk reduction efforts.
He added that drainage desilting and waste evacuation were ongoing across Kaduna metropolis to improve preparedness for possible flooding.
Also speaking, Magdalene Ilewabo, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of the EPREP Project, said the exercise was aimed at strengthening community resilience through practical disaster preparedness.
Ilewabo said participants were trained to use locally available materials for rescue and evacuation during flood emergencies to enable vulnerable communities take early action and reduce disaster risks.
