The Nigerian Army has rescued no fewer than seven persons including six students and a driver, Sani Umar, from gunmen terrorising commuters in Katsina State.
As learnt, the six students were identified as students of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma who were commuting on the road.
The victims were rescued by the military in collaboration with the police, while they were being taken away in a vehicle occupied by three gunmen.
Upon the interception, the gunmen opened fire on the military forces, however, the security forces responded with superior techniques to subdue the bandits.
When the gunmen couldn’t overpower the superior firepower of the security forces, they fled the scene into the surrounding bushes while leaving their victims behind.
It was gathered on Tuesday that the rescue took place along the Dayi–Malumfashi road at about 11:45 p.m. yesterday.
A military operative involved in the operation said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to disrupt kidnapping activities and protect travellers along major routes in Katsina State.
The operative added that troops have remained on alert in the area and are sustaining patrols to prevent further attacks.
Meanwhile, the rescued victims are expected to receive necessary attention as security authorities continue efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding their abduction and apprehend those responsible.
