Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has revealed his all-time favourite footballer, choosing Nigerian legend Jay Jay Okocha ahead of global icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Afrobeats star made the remarks during a recent interview with ESPN, where he shared his views on some of football’s biggest names and his personal favourites across different positions.
When asked to name the greatest footballer of all time, Burna Boy said Okocha tops his list, although he also acknowledged Brazilian legend Pele.
“I will say Jay Jay Okocha. It is between him and Pele. I am not doing that Ronaldo or Messi stuff,” the singer said.
Beyond the greatest-of-all-time debate, Burna Boy also highlighted other football personalities he admires.
He named England captain Harry Kane as his favourite striker of all time and revealed that Manchester United remains the club he supports.
The music star also praised Spain and Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, describing him as the best young player in world football.
On his favourite current Manchester United player, Burna Boy picked England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
The interview has generated reactions among football fans, particularly over his decision to rank Okocha above Messi and Ronaldo in the long-running GOAT debate.
Widely regarded as one of Africa’s most gifted footballers, Okocha enjoyed an illustrious career with clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Fenerbahçe and Bolton Wanderers, while also becoming a legend with Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
