The Federal Government has suspended the proposed increase in registration fees for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
The decision follows widespread criticism from parents, students, education stakeholders and members of the public over the planned adjustment.
The announcement was made on Monday in a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade.
Earlier directive withdrawn
According to the ministry, the June 18, 2026 circular that communicated the proposed fee increase has been officially withdrawn.
The government explained that the suspension will allow for a comprehensive review of the proposal and broader consultations with key stakeholders before any final decision is made.

The Ministry of Education said the proposed fee review was prompted by rising operational costs associated with conducting national examinations.
It noted that examination fees have remained largely unchanged for several years despite increased spending on logistics, security, printing of examination materials, technology deployment, quality assurance and other services required to maintain the credibility of the examinations.
Stakeholder consultations to begin
The ministry stated that the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the proposal be placed on hold in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to transparent, inclusive and evidence-based policymaking.
It added that fresh consultations will involve examination bodies, state ministries of education, school owners, administrators, parents’ associations, organised labour and other education stakeholders.
According to the ministry, no new examination registration fees will take effect until the consultation process has been completed.

The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring affordable access to quality education while balancing the financial realities of administering credible public examinations.
The ministry also assured Nigerians that updates would be provided as discussions with stakeholders progress.
The proposed increase in WAEC and NECO examination fees had generated widespread reactions across the country, with several public figures and organisations urging the government to reconsider the decision.
