With an agreement in place that will keep him in charge until June 2028, Mark van Bommel has agreed to take over as head coach of Belgium.
Rudi Garcia will be replaced by the Dutchman after Belgium’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
All parties have reached a comprehensive agreement, even though contracts have not yet been signed.
An official announcement is anticipated once the last paperwork is finished.
As reported by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano on social media on Wednesday, the development was confirmed, with Romano stating that Mark van Bommel would be taking over as Belgium’s new head coach, describing it as a done deal.
He added that a contract was in place until June 2028 for van Bommel, who is set to replace Rudi Garcia.
Van Bommel takes on his first international managerial role following successful spells at club level.
The former Netherlands captain has previously managed PSV Eindhoven, VfL Wolfsburg and Royal Antwerp, where he led the Belgian club to a historic league and cup double during the 2022–23 season.
Belgium will be hoping van Bommel can steer the Red Devils into a new era as they begin preparations for UEFA Euro 2028 qualification and continue the process of rebuilding the national team.
Belgium’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to an end at the quarter-final stage, with the Red Devils showing moments of quality before eventually losing out to Spain.
