Former Vice President and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has appointed actor-turned-politician and party chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson.
The appointment comes weeks after Okonkwo publicly criticised the ADC’s choice of vice-presidential candidate, arguing that selecting a candidate from the South-South would further marginalise the South-East politically.
Okonkwo announced his appointment in a statement posted on his official X handle on Thursday, expressing gratitude to Atiku for the confidence reposed in him and describing the appointment as a reflection of the former vice president’s inclusive leadership style.
He said Atiku values dialogue and compromise over resentment, adding that recent discussions within the ADC addressed the political interests of the South-East within the framework of the Electoral Act 2026.
“I give God all the glory for being appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his spokesperson. I thank His Excellency for the immense confidence reposed in me,” Okonkwo said.
“Rather than take offence at associates for expressing genuine reservations about any action taken, His Excellency always opts for dialogue and compromise that engender solutions to problems,” he added.
Okonkwo disclosed that discussions with Atiku and other ADC leaders had addressed concerns about the South-East’s political interests.
“At a dialogue with His Excellency and other well-meaning members of the African Democratic Congress, the interests of the South-East were discussed and guaranteed,” he said.
He also thanked ADC stakeholders, including Kashim Imam, former National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s aide, Ekene Onwuka, for their contributions to strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
Okonkwo pledged to use his new role to advance the party’s vision and assured supporters that he would rely on their prayers and encouragement as he undertakes the responsibility.
Concluding his statement, he thanked his family, supporters, and friends, saying, “I still covet your prayers for wisdom, courage, provision and protection needed to carry out this challenging responsibility, which will usher in a glorious and great Nigeria.”
