Former England defender Gary Neville has compared France captain Kylian Mbappe to Brazilian football icon Ronaldo after another impressive display at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Neville made the comparison while analysing France’s 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32, a match in which Mbappe scored twice to help Les Bleus book a place in the Round of 16.
Mbappe’s finishing draws praise
Speaking during ITV’s live broadcast, Neville said Mbappe’s movement and finishing in dangerous areas reminded him of the legendary Brazilian striker.
According to the former Manchester United defender, Mbappe possesses the same ability to deceive defenders with subtle body feints before clinically finishing his chances.
Neville recalled facing Ronaldo several times during his playing career, describing the former Brazil international as one of the most difficult forwards to defend.
France star continues World Cup form
Neville also pointed to the challenge Sweden faced in trying to contain Mbappe, noting that defenders are often forced into difficult decisions when attempting to stop the Real Madrid forward.
Mbappe has now scored six goals at the ongoing World Cup and remains one of the tournament’s leading scorers.
France will face Paraguay in the Round of 16 as Didier Deschamps’ side continues its quest for another World Cup title.
