The Nigerian Army has arrested two Boko Haram fighters during a security operation targeting insurgent activities and terrorist movement routes in Borno State.
The arrested suspects one identified as 42-year-old Sidi Shagari and 25-year-old Abubakar Sadiq, from the Birni in Biu Local Government Area were caught in possession of two mobile phones, three cutlasses, one dagger and N9,500 in cash from the suspects with the recovered items now been secured as exhibits for further investigation.
The suspects are currently in custody alongside items recovered from them, while investigations are ongoing to determine their roles within the terrorist network.
It was gathered on Friday that the operation was carried out along the Mandaragirau–Kurtum corridor, extending to the Nguma area in Borno State at about 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
A military source familiar with the operation said military deployed a gun truck and 10 motorcycles during the clearance mission, which focused on searching suspected terrorist hideouts and restricting insurgents’ freedom of movement across the area.
“The operation reflects the military’s determination to sustain pressure on terrorist elements and deny them safe havens,” the military source said.
“Troops remain committed to protecting communities and preventing insurgents from regrouping.”
According to the source, the terrorists and all recovered exhibits have since been moved to the Abogo Largema Cantonment for detailed investigation and other necessary administrative procedures.
Explaining further, the source said the operation forms part of Operation Desert Sanity V, an ongoing theatre-wide offensive designed to disrupt terrorist operations, dismantle insurgent networks and strengthen security across Nigeria’s North-East.
Although he described the overall situation in the theatre as relatively calm, the source cautioned that the environment remains unpredictable.
He added that troops have maintained a high state of alertness, with morale and operational readiness remaining strong as counter-insurgency operations continue.
