The Nigerian Army has arrested a terrorist spy in Borno state, dealing another significant blow to insurgents’ intelligence network supporting violent operations nationwide.
The spy simply identified as Abulfatahi is believed to have played a critical role in gathering intelligence and providing operational support to Boko Haram fighters and recent terrorist activities in Borno.
Preliminary investigations reportedly indicate that Abulfatahi worked closely with a notorious Boko Haram commander called Akilu.
Abulfatahi carried out assignments that included collecting illegal levies from residents and identifying individuals targeted for abduction.
A military source familiar with the arrest said on Wednesday that the breakthrough that led to the spy’s arrest came yesterday during a targeted intelligence-led operation in Monguno, Borno State.
The source said troops apprehended Abulfatahi after weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering aimed at disrupting terrorist support structures.
“The suspect is providing valuable information that could help expose other members of the network,” the military source said.
“Every piece of intelligence obtained is being carefully examined to ensure everyone involved in supporting terrorist activities is identified and brought to justice.”
Also, during the operation, troops reportedly recovered two telephone contacts from Abulfatahi’s mobile phone.
Military investigators believe the contacts may belong to individuals connected to the terrorist commander and are analysing the information for possible intelligence leads.
Moreover, the military source said investigators revealed that Abulfatahi has been linked to the recent terrorist attack on Cross Kauwa in Borno.
He added that the arrest operation followed sustained efforts to identify individuals allegedly supplying intelligence and logistical assistance to Boko Haram fighters operating within the area.
“Our objective extends beyond arresting individual suspects,” another security source said.
“We are determined to dismantle the entire intelligence network that enables these attacks.
“Investigations remain active, and additional arrests are possible as more evidence emerges”, the military source said.
He added that the arrest is part of sustained intelligence-driven counter-terrorism operations across the Lake Chad region, where military forces have intensified efforts to disrupt insurgent financiers, informants and logistics providers.
