At least 25 people have died and dozens more were injured after a passenger bus overturned near Boumerdes, a coastal town east of Algeria’s capital, Algiers.
The country’s Civil Protection Department said the cause of the crash, which occurred on Friday, was not immediately known, while the injured were evacuated to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited the crash site and met with emergency responders, where the bus was seen lying at the bottom of a ravine.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
Algeria has recorded several deadly bus accidents in recent years. In August last year, 18 people were killed in a crash near Algiers, while another accident in December claimed 14 lives after a bus overturned in Bechar, in the country’s south.
According to road safety authorities, 3,838 people were killed and more than 37,000 others injured in traffic accidents across Algeria last year, underscoring the country’s persistent road safety challenges and the need for stronger preventive measures.
