Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has pledged not to target or persecute political opponents if elected president in the 2027 general election, saying his administration would uphold democratic principles and strengthen opposition politics.
Speaking during an interview with DW, the former Anambra State governor said his priority would be to ensure that Nigeria’s institutions function effectively and that governance is guided by the rule of law rather than political retaliation.
Obi said he would not use the powers of the presidency to settle political scores, stressing that a healthy democracy requires strong opposition parties that can hold the government accountable.
“The system must work the way it should function. I would never prosecute anybody politically, and I would never do anything wrong while in office,” Obi said.
He added that his administration would encourage constructive engagement with opposition leaders instead of treating them as adversaries.
According to him, opposition parties should have the freedom to challenge government decisions whenever necessary in the interest of the country.
Obi also said he would adopt a consultative approach to addressing national challenges, particularly the security situation in northern Nigeria.
“If I was president, with what is happening in the North, I would invite all opposition parties and sit with stakeholders in the region to discuss the issues and find lasting solutions,” he said.
The comments come as political parties continue consultations and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with governance, security and economic reforms expected to dominate campaign discussions.
