The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by an additional two weeks, moving the deadline from July 10 to July 24, 2026, to enable more eligible Nigerians to register ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The commission also announced the introduction of an online self-service registration platform for first-time voters, describing the initiative as part of its efforts to make voter registration easier, more accessible and technology-driven.
INEC said the decisions were reached after reviewing the progress of the ongoing exercise and considering appeals from stakeholders across the country.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.
Extension driven by stakeholder feedback
According to the electoral commission, the extension followed consultations with its offices nationwide, political parties, civil society organisations, election observers and other stakeholders who expressed concerns that many eligible Nigerians were yet to register.
INEC explained that extending the exercise would provide additional opportunities for qualified citizens to be included in the national register of voters before preparations for the next general election enter their final stages.
The Continuous Voter Registration exercise commenced on August 18, 2025, and was originally expected to end on July 10, 2026.
However, with the latest decision, registration will now continue until Friday, July 24, 2026.
The commission stressed that the extension demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that no eligible Nigerian is denied the opportunity to participate in future elections because of registration challenges.
“The extension underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the Register of Voters,” the statement read.
Digital innovation expands voter access
As part of efforts to modernise the electoral process, INEC also announced that it will launch an online self-service registration portal for first-time voters on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
The platform, which will be accessible through http://cvr.inecnigeria.org, is expected to simplify the registration process by allowing eligible Nigerians to begin and complete their registration using personal electronic devices.
According to the commission, applicants will also be able to complete biometric capture through the system without the need for an initial visit to an INEC office.
The electoral body noted that detailed instructions and user guides would be available on the portal to help applicants complete the process successfully.
Security measures to safeguard voter register
INEC assured Nigerians that the new digital registration system has been designed with multiple security features to protect the credibility of the voter register.
According to the commission, the portal includes robust identity verification mechanisms, biometric validation and backend integrity checks capable of detecting duplicate or fraudulent registrations.
The commission explained that the safeguards are intended to preserve the integrity, transparency and credibility of Nigeria’s electoral register while improving the overall voter registration experience.
INEC added that the introduction of technology into the registration process reflects its commitment to strengthening electoral administration through innovation.
Commission seeks wider voter participation
The electoral commission said the online platform would significantly reduce congestion at physical registration centres and make it easier for millions of Nigerians, particularly young people and first-time voters, to register from any location.
INEC noted that digital innovation has become increasingly important in improving electoral services and expanding citizens’ access to democratic processes.
The commission expressed confidence that the initiative would make voter registration faster, more efficient and more convenient for applicants across the country.
It added that physical registration centres would continue to operate alongside the online platform to ensure that every eligible citizen can access the registration exercise regardless of their location or level of digital literacy.
Preparations gather pace for 2027 elections
INEC urged Nigerians who have attained the age of 18 and have not previously registered as voters to take advantage of both the extension and the new online registration platform.
The commission also encouraged citizens who recently became eligible to ensure they complete the registration process before the new July 24 deadline.
According to INEC, increasing voter registration remains critical to strengthening democratic participation and ensuring that more Nigerians have the opportunity to choose their leaders through the ballot.
The Continuous Voter Registration exercise is expected to be the final major nationwide registration exercise before preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
Political parties, civil society organisations and election observers have repeatedly called on eligible Nigerians, especially youths and first-time voters, to register early and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the polls.
With the extension of the registration deadline and the introduction of an online registration platform, INEC hopes to significantly increase the number of registered voters and improve citizens’ participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a credible, inclusive and transparent voter registration exercise that gives every eligible Nigerian a fair opportunity to participate in future elections.
“The Commission remains committed to a credible, inclusive and accessible voter registration process, and to advancing the use of technology to improve citizens’ experience in the electoral process,” Haruna stated.
